Our first Man-lifting kite

It was made in Le Cannet in Roussillon, in 1995, with a single kite. We raised a kid with a piece of webbing, on which he was sitting. He was the son of Michel Trouillet. Also in 1995, in Hossegor was raised over a hundred kids, but they amounted to less than 10m.

Then in 1996, with three kites, we ascended Benjamin Rouyer and Claire (my daughter) in Cap d'Agde, more than 30 m. At the time, the kites were still red. Wind conditions to be able to raise are 3 Beaufort minimum, but 4 Beaufort is ideal for front kite (or pilot kite).

We can go up to 7 Beaufort, if the wind is not blowing in gusts. The front kite, depending on weather conditions (wind) is placed between 100 and 150 meters from the first tractive kite, then there are 10 meters between each kite.

The implementation

For the front kite, clamping is different from other kites. It is much more powerful than the tractives kites underneath, it tends to the line.

The front kite is put directly to the main cable and the front of the kite is slightly in front of the cable line, 15 to 20 cm.

If we put the same setting for the tractives kites below, they come up against the cable and would start to oscillate. To prevent them from leaving right and left, they pass through a ring that has the bar. Kites must be adjusted according to wind conditions.

The cable

Unlike Saconney, we have kept only one cable, as part of a festival, because it is not up to 2.5 km altitude, it remains in lower altitudes. We did not use steel cable for ease of handling and storage. With steel cable should have been done a very complex winding system: pulling cable, the first strand is stretched, the second a little less tense, the last strand is not hardly tense and when we begin to wrap, there is a control system for not to extend the cable storage reel.

More, we should have done in an adjustable brake. This manipulation, in the end, it is one of the team members (Sylvie Bernard or I), which make it. This is why we are two people on winch, a person who manages the winding or unwinding and other one who regulate the tension behind, which requires special attention to security reasons. On the last tractive kite we fasten the cable diameter 9 and resistance 900Kg to ensure the safety of the person who raise.

The winch

It is a 4-stroke engine 5 HP. It is equipped with a reducing 1/120 driving a capstan system. That is to say, it turns very slowly and we back down the cable at 12 m / minute. The winch is anchored by six spades and is insured by a more concrete anchor 1.7 tonne on the back of the winch. The pulley is aluminum. When we do rising, we put the number of kites enough to lift the weight of a man with a margin of 20 to 100kg. The winch not struggle at all.

Distribution of roles in the team

For successful risings in addition to the wind, we need a team. The leader that everyone had appointed without consultation was always Daniel.

This year (2013) for the first time, the roles were reversed. Daniel is not always the leader, one day it's Bruno, after it will be Bernard, and rotated so that everyone appropriates the train. Only two, with Nicole can not make it work.

However, there is a position that is irremovable, is that of Bruno, who is at the 2-ton post, which holds kites. He manages the pulley which raise kites and people.

At the winch, is Daniel or Bernard which is managing the mechanical side.

The person who secures the cable behind can be Sylvie or Nicole. They can simply hold the cable with some regular tension. Each is necessary for the position.

At each ascent, we give a diploma balloonist. The first diploma was done by Jack Rosiere, from a patent balloonist period.

We ascended 35 people in 2013.

Our best memory: the first rising, because it allowed us to test the strength and stability that could be achieved with a kite
